Boligán cartoon exhibition / 2012 Portugal

Ángel Boligán, the cartoonist from Latin America, who is the cartoonist the most awarded in the universe, is all right.
The city of Vila Franca de Xira, a Portuguese town 30 km far from Lisbon, is the sponsor of his first personal exhibition in Europe, named “Ink in the Mirror”, with 100 cartoons, 80 of them are originals and 20 are digital prints.
The great Portuguese cartoonist Antonio Antunes selected works from 2002 to now, most of them were published in the mexican newspaper El Universal, Boligán works for. All categories of cartoons choiced by the artist are presented : Gag/humor, editorial cartoons, comics, personal caricatures and illustations.
Vila Franca de Xira – Antonio saids – is my home town and, since 1999, I organize the event called “CartoonXira” for my city ; moreother, since 2009, every year I add an exhibition of a foreign cartoonist. In previous years, we could see here the artworks by Hermengildo Sábat, from Argentine, Loredano from Brazil and Willem from the Netherlands. Now it is the turn of Boligán, whom I invited because he is one of the greatest present cartoonists, and his high artistic work has an universal sense that brings an easy communication with people.
This exhibition – Boligán saids– motivates me and it makes me enthousiastic, because it is the greatest and the most important exhibition I have ever presented until now and it shows my work of the last ten years. It is a great honour to be here as artist invited by the Municipality of Vila Franca de Xira. The exhibition, the vernissage of which was on February 18th, runs up to March 25th ; a wonderful catalogue was edited, with a note by the Mexican journalist Jorge Zepeda Patterson, who saids, among other things : “Boligán tells us he is a Cuban, but he could be a Mexican as well, or an Argentinean, or a German. His cartoons about soccer, love or about a bench in a park are so universal ! “
Only his accent with the cut “s” and the prominent-haunched women in his cartoons could give us an indice of his tropical origine.
However, the numerous international awards and the constant publishing of his work all over the world have turned him into a Global Citizen for years. As he is a cartoonist, he has an advantage : he don't need any translator. The reason is not only that he draws mute characters in cartoons without title ; he has the talent for creating a very sharp and clear message with attractive lines that don't need header and footer.
